PNG Journal of Education, Volume 45, 2025
Editorial Comment

As we present Volume 45 of the Papua New Guinea Journal of Education (PNGJE), we are reminded of the enduring role scholarship plays in shaping the nation’s future. Education in Papua New Guinea stands at the crossroads of tradition and innovation. The challenges of access, equity, and quality remain pressing, yet the opportunities afforded by digital transformation, regional collaboration, and renewed policy focus are equally profound.

This volume presents several interesting studies exploring the current state of technological innovation in the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) as well as the overall impact of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) on tertiary education in Papua New Guinea.

The first of these, “AI Adoption, Competencies, and Attitudes among UPNG Students” reveals growing student engagement with AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools, balanced by concerns about academic integrity and equitable access. Its findings provide a foundation for responsible policy development in two crucial domains: course delivery design/student assessment and institutional AI guidelines.

Another study, “Exploring Student Competences, Practices and Attitudes to Technology Enabled Learning (TEL)”, is a collective effort by the Linguistics Department in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS UPNG). It examines how students navigate digital platforms and blended learning. It underscores both opportunities for expanded access and the urgent need for institutional support and digital literacy.

A paper from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS UPNG) provides a “Protocol for Developing and Integrating Communication Skills Curricula for Undergraduate Health Professions Programs at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Papua New Guinea”.

The fourth paper titled “Papua New Guinea Primary Mathematics Textbook and Reflection: a comparison between Papua New Guinea and Japan” shares the initiative PNG has taken in improving the quality of mathematics education, recognizing it as a major and fundamental subject in a highly technological society.

The Journal’s mission has always been to provide a platform for critical reflection and constructive debate. In 2025, this mission is more urgent than ever. As artificial intelligence, climate change, digital technology and shifting demographics reshape the educational landscape, Papua New Guinea must ensure that its policies safeguard academic integrity while fostering innovation.

We invite readers to engage with the insights offered here, to question assumptions, and to contribute to the ongoing conversation about what education in Papua New Guinea should look like in the decades ahead. Together, we can ensure that learning and teaching remain the cornerstone of national development and cultural vitality in the next 50 years and beyond.
